About Permaculture Future Foundation
Permaculture Future Foundation is a 501c3 charitable, educational, and research organization recognized as non-profit by the I.R.S. Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
The Foundation is led by Peter Bane (author of The Permaculture Handbook), Darrell Frey (author of The Bioshelter Market Farm and co-author of The Food Forest Handbook) and Gloria Flora (principal with Sustainable Obtainable Solutions), who together hold nine diplomas in permaculture specializations, and have more than ten decades of experience in permaculture design, teaching, farming, forestry, community development, construction, food systems, and non-profit management.
We share origins with the Permaculture Institute of North America (pina.in), and cooperate closely with them and with their extensive network of regional hubs, allied organizations, diplomates, and project partners to fund and advance regenerative action across North America and Hawaii.
The Foundation was established specifically to advance collaborative innovations by organizations and communities, using permaculture design and education, that accelerate and scale solutions to critical challenges in the environmental and social regeneration of landscapes and communities.
Regenerative projects beget further virtuous action: research enables practitioners to improve their work and better respond to emerging conditions, education stimulates informed action and further learning, investments in biodiverse landscapes will grow into new forests and prairies, build soil, clean water, and ensure healthy food for all. Community repair and development restore and create living spaces for civic encounter, public participation, and green streets, while building trust between neighbors as a basis for vibrant local economies.
Our Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share ethics compel us to work for an abundant future for all, to invest and distribute surpluses to create health, peace, and justice in the world.
We focus on strategic and replicable approaches to critical social and ecological problems.
• Wildfire Risk Mitigation… In response to $200 billion annual losses from wildfire we have demonstrated how surplus and dangerous fuels can be converted into soil-nourishing biochar, made on-site with inexpensive tools by small trained crews working seasonally in their own communities. This protects settlements, saves lives, and also creates employment and spawns new businesses.
• Urban Neighborhood Empowerment… We have helped to fund permaculture design training for community leaders and activists in underserved urban neighborhoods, increasing food supplies, employment, and better housing.
• Disaster Preparedness & Recovery… In the face of mounting climate-related disasters of flood, fire, storm, and drought, we have supported the publishing of disaster preparation, planning, and recovery manuals to promote resilience in all regions. This series is unparalleled in its coverage, and communicates practical and little-known strategies for protecting life and property.
• Healthy Food Systems… We have organized training for new and would-be farmers seeking to establish perennial crops using soil-building methods free of poisons, while also helping them bolster collective marketing efforts to deliver nutritious food into food deserts in nearby cities.
• New Forests Everywhere… We are developing templates for the broadscale planting of food forests and shelterbelts in 23 countries.
All of these projects and more warrant support, and with your help we can deliver it. Please give generously.
